Burny Mattinson started out as an animator on Robin
Hood (1973) and The
Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh (1977). He then went on
to writing for classics such as The Rescuers
(1977), The Fox and the Hound (1981),
The
Great Mouse Detective (1986), and The
Lion King (1994).
The idea for Mickey's Christmas Carol was inspired by a 1974 Disney record album of the same name.
Director Burny Mattinson was inspired to begin the project, with the okay from Disney president and chief executive officer, Ron Miller, in May 1981. One of the difficult tasks in bringing back such fvorite characters as Mickey and Donald was finding the right voices. Clarence " Ducky" Nash was still available to voice Donald as he had since Donald's debut, but Mickey's voice introduced a new talent--Wayne Allwine.
Wayne Allwine, the official voice of Mickey Mouse since Mickey's Christmas Carol, met his wife Russi Taylor, the voice of Minnie Mouse, at a session of voices for Totally Minnie.
The song "Oh, What a Merry Christmas" was written by Frederick Searles and Irwin Kostal especially for this short movie.
Mickey's Christmas Carol was nominated for an Academy Award for
Best Short Film.
