Animated Movies was launched by Olivier Mouroux in 1999. In addition to a daily news report, he also created a database of information about past, current, and upcoming films. In 2003, he took a job in the industry and had to give up his work on the site. Several fans of Animated Movies decided to take on the task of keeping the news portion of his site going, and founded what is now Animated Views. As AV turns 15, let's take a look back at the site we descended from. Below you can explore the database Olivier compiled at Animated Movies during its existence, as it last appeared online in October 2003. |

Co-director Lee Unkrich hinted during an October 2001 interview that this feature is about something Lasseter has a passion for, just as his love for toys resulted in Toy Story. He didn't elaborate, but he did say, 'You can look forward to another great film." John Lasseter revealed a month later in a USA Today article that this passion was cars: Route 66 will be a car-driven vehicle: "Our technology has matured beyond a novelty. In the beginning, it was 'Wow, this image was made by a computer.' Wonderful. But it has to come back to a good story with great characters and a believable world."
An official press release in April 2002 revealed that Cars would
be a "high-octane adventure comedy featuring a wide assortment of cars
as characters that get their kicks on Route 66."

FACTS
This film will
complete the existing contract currently tying Pixar to Disney.
In October 2001, Glenn McQueen confirmed that he had started work on "John's next film" as animation supervisor.
This project does not have any connection with the 60's television series Route 66.
The movie's title was officially changed from Route 66 to Cars in April 2002.
Lee Unkrich, who likens co-directing to "the team of Batman and Robin," confirmed in a May 2003 interview that he would be "directing Cars with John [Lasseter] when I finish [Finding Nemo]. You know, I believe we have a Cars cameo in Finding Nemo."
Referring to the premiere of an Incredibles teaser trailer with Finding Nemo on May 30, 2003, CEO Steve Jobs commented that "this is the first time a Pixar film will have an attached trailer for an upcoming Pixar film. This will help establish the concept of a continuous Pixar franchise, with each picture film helping to drive audiences to the next Pixar film." Which means that we should expect a Cars teaser attached to The Incredibles in holiday 2004!
Finding Nemo's co-director Lee Unkrich revealed in June 2003 that "the main characters are cars and the whole thing takes place on Route 66."
Steve Jobs commented
during an earnings conference in August 2003 that "I've never seen John
so excited about a film before, and he has good reasons to be. All I can
say is: buckle up! Cars is going to be very special. We're working
on a teaser trailer for Cars, that we will release with The
Incredibles next year."
